Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's Typic Rosé

Did you miss us? At least we didn’t stay away for two years this time. Due to reasons beyond our control, we had to skip a week, but we are back and the first beverage this week we have to share with you will be anything but typical. Or will it? It may not be typical, but it actually will be Typic, Typic rosé wine that is. This is a wine that Keith really enjoyed last year, to the tune of at least 4 bottles, but this is a new year and a new vintage. One never knows what Mother Nature has in store for us from year to year, so continuity is anything but a guarantee. Join us as we delve into this wine for the first time this year to find out if the present reality can match the recollections of the past.  What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's Reserve Barossa Shiraz 2016

Sometimes a beverage comes along that immediately grabs your attention. It could be the latest release from your favorite brewery, a new twist on an old favorite from a trusted distillery, or maybe it is something as simple as the eye catching packaging. This podcast features a wine that made us take immediate notice for two reasons. One, it was made from one of our favorite grapes from a great growing region for this varietal. Two, it is from a trusted source for great wines at value driven prices. The wine we are trying this week is the Trader Joe’s Reserve Shiraz from Barossa in Australia. This bottle would retail from $20-$25 if it wasn’t private labeled exclusively for Trader Joe’s. Listen and drink along with us as we see if this wine has the “legs” to stand on, or at least to cling to the inside of our glasses.  What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Pacific Grove & Harken Chardonnays

For this podcast, we present to you a tale of two California chardonnays. We thought it would be fun to compare wines that had quite a bit in common. They are both barrel fermented, both undergo malolactic fermentation, both from Perlier CA, and both are from the 2016 vintage. One big difference that they have is the price, with one of them being $5 more than the other. We invite you to watch as we find out if it was the best of chards or the worst of the chards. Most likely it was somewhere in between, but you never know.  Sit back and watch or listen. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's 2013 La Paca Spanish Garnacha

With the success of last weeks wine from Trader Joe's, Keith decided we should try another.  Today at the tasting table we have the La Paca Spanish Garnacha.  This particular grape originated in Spain, but goes by Grenache in the other areas where it is cultivated:  Sardinia, the south of France and California's San Joaquin Valley.  Due to it's tolerance for drought/heat and late ripening it has become one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world.  Typically used as part of red blends such as Rioja and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, aged monovarietal wines can cost anywhere from $30-$60.  Time to taste and see if the $7 La Paca brings our palate a glimpse of all this varietal has to offer.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's Pacific Grove California Chardonnay

Ripped from the pages of the latest Trader Joe's Fearless Flyer, today at the tasting tables we have the Pacific Grove California Chardonnay.  Made from 100% Chardonnay grapes, this wine goes through a very unique process of small batch barrel and malolactic fermentation.  These two processes are more common in red wine making and are normally reserved for higher end wines, but at $5.99 and a Chardonnay this wine is neither.  Time to taste and see if all that work was worthwhile or if these grapes should have stayed on the vine.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Sebastiani 2012 Zinfandel

What's better than finding a delicious Zinfandel?  Finding one at a good price of course!  Today at the tasting table we will be uncorking the 2012 Sebastiani Zinfandel.  Sonoma County is well known as one of the finest regions in the US for this particular grape, but that type of quality usually comes at a cost.  This particular bottle is priced around $17 depending on where you shop. That may be a fair, we'll find out soon enough, but thanks to our local Trader Joe's our cost was only $9.  Time to taste and discover if the right balance of fruit and spice we look for in a Zin has been achieved  or if this one should have stayed on the vine.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Live on Location at Tap and Bottle Featuring Hangar 24 & Logsdon Part Two

Once again we are Live on Location this week at Tap and Bottle.  Owners Scott and Rebecca kept the conversation going for part two as we discussed some out of state breweries that are new to Tucson.  Another good decision on their part was to not only talk about those breweries, but to share some of the beers they had on tap.  First up is the Vinaceous from Hangar 24 Brewery.  Part of their Local Fields Series it's an English Old Ale that gets and addition of Mourvedre grapes and a touch of oak.  Next is the Seizoen Bretta from Logsdon Farmhouse Organic Ales.  As you can probably tell by the name it uses Brettanomyces as well as being unfiltered and bottle conditioned with pear juice for natural carbonation.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Live on Location" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Shot - 2010 Affentaler Pinot Noir

The 2010 Affentaler Pinot Noir is grown in Germany's southern most wine growing region known as Baden.  This area which is part of the Rhine Valley and is at the foot of the Black Forest has become know for its Rieslings and Pinot Noirs.  Affentaler means "Valley of the Monkey" hence the symbolic copper monkey logo which has been around since 1949.  Most of our knowledge of Pinot Noir comes from the California and Oregon expression of this grape, so it will be interesting to see what Germany's terroir has to offer.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.
