AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's 2011 Josefina Syrah Rose

Just passing the longest day of the year and being in the thick of summer, we thought it would be a good idea to enjoy some wine appropriate for the season.  Today we have the 2011 Josefina Syrah Rose from Trader Joe's.  This style usually comes with the stigma of being very sweet and not for "real" wine drinkers.  That has changed in the last several years as more and more winemakers are seizing the opportunity to make something light and refreshing while still retaining some complexity.  Will this value rose rise to the occasion?  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Rough Draughts - Four Gins

Fresh off the cutting room floor is this collection of outtakes from our Four Gins podcast we did back in February.  I guess four months old isn't really fresh, but oh well.  For those of you unfamiliar with our "Rough Draughts" it's a collection of bits from previous podcasts that were edited for time.  These in particular all come from Episode 24 where we had a guest, Eric, who was sharing with us his collection of gins.  The extended discussion and humor found throughout should hold everyone over until next week when the "Give It A Shot" podcasts start flowing.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Shot - Bear Republic, Fat Head's, Stone Collaboration Beer Texas Brown Ale

These many collaboration beers have been at the very least interesting and sometimes quite delicious.  Today on the show we have the latest of these ventures featuring Bear Republic, Fat Head's, and of course Stone Brewing.  Their creation is a very unique TBA (Texas Brown Ale) with the addition of some brown sugar, molasses, and cascade hops.  This beer marks the first time in over 15 years that Stone has used cascade hops.  Will this be the last?  If you read their blog the answer is probably no, but it doesn't sound like they are making any big changes to their hop choices anytime soon.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Shot - Laughing Dog Brewing Sneaky Pete Imperial IPA

Laughing Dog Brewery is making its second appearance on the podcast.  The first time was with their Rocket Dog Rye IPA.  Today we have the Sneaky Pete Imperial IPA.  This five hop blend of Simcoe, Glacier, Centennial, Vanguard and Hallertuaer clock in at an even 10% ABV.  Besides the obvious that both of these beers are IPAs, there is actually something else these two beers have in common.  Information regarding them cannot be found on Laughing Dog's website.  Not sure why this is the case, but it's true.  Read into that what you will.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

As I mentioned during the video, there isn't really any information at their site about this beer.  I provided a link to it anyway in case listeners are interested in their other offerings.

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Second Shot - Odell Brewing St. Lupulin Extra Pale Ale

We are not above admitting a mistake if one has been made.  You never know when you first try a beverage if there was something wrong with either the drink itself or maybe the circumstances under which it was had.  Whatever the case, it is always good to go back and try things again and that is what we are doing today.  The St. Lupulin from Odell Brewing was a beer we tried almost two years ago at the recommendation of one of our listeners and contributors to the site, Eric Greene.  At the time we were not fans of what we thought was a rather bland seasonal offering.  Time has now past and at the behest of several listeners we are going to "Give It A Second Shot" and see if this ode to the resin found within the hop will change our minds.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Shot - Dogfish Head Tweason'ale Gluten Free Beer

With gluten-free beer options on the rise we decided to look to one of our favorite breweries and see what they could come up with.  The Tweason'ale from Dogfish Head is a mixture of sorghum, strawberries, and buckwheat honey.  Sold seasonally four times a year and coming in at 6% ABV, this beer is intended for those who suffer from Celiac disease or are simply looking to cut back on gluten.  While we do not fall into either of those categories, we still are excited for a new taste experience.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Shot - Sierra Nevada Brewing Kellerweis Hefeweizen

It is time once again for our "Give It A Shot" podcast where we share with you, our valued listener, something we discovered that needs to be shared immediately.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.  Available year round, the Sierra Nevada Kellerweis is a hefeweizen in the most classic of ways.  It's one of the only American Hefeweizens to use open style fermentation, a very labor-intensive process.  Like the Rogue Hefeweizen earlier in the week, it also falls into the sessionable category at 4.8%.  Not to continue with the comparisons, but I will, they both share a hop in common, Sterling.  Time to stop talking and start tasting!

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Shot - Rogue Brewing Mom Hefeweizen

It is time once again for our "Give It A Shot" podcast where we share with you, our valued listener, something we discovered that needs to be shared immediately.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.  Rogue Brewing kicks of our week long salute to the hefeweizen with a beer simply called Mom Hefeweizen.  It's very similar to a beer that can be found year round called Haf-E-Weizen, but that particular version does not appear to incorporate the infusion of rose petals and rose water.  Like most beers in this style, it's very sessionable at only 4.8% ABV.  The real question is, will we want to have more than one?  Time to find out.
