Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's Espiral Vinho Rosé

This episode brings us the latest installment in Keith’s attempt to find a rose wine that Andrew will truly enjoy. It was actually recommended by a Trader Joe’s regular who really knows what he is talking about when he is talking about wine. Another cool thing about this wine is that we have already had something from this winery that we enjoyed. The beverage we will be trying is the Espiral Vinho Rose, from Portugal. Like the Vinho Verde which we referenced before, it has a slight effervescence when you first pour it that quickly dissipates. What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's Platinum Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley 2016

While they don’t happen every week, when we can do back-to-back podcasts that are connected by a particular theme it is something we enjoy. The thread tying these two items together may not be instantly obvious, but when you look a little closer it becomes very apparent. In our weekly discussion about the items to share this week, Andrew mentioned that he had a bourbon he wanted to share and Keith wanted to stay with the wine theme for at least another week. Fortuitous events were already in motion to tie these two topics together that we were not aware of at the time. The first of the items that we will try this week is the wine portion. The wine we are trying is the Trader Joe’s Platinum Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma Knights Valley. The Platinum Reserve line is the most expensive of their private label wines at $14.99 per bottle and should compare with other wines in $30 to $40 range. Without giving away too much, the bourbon we will try next has a Cabernet component to it as well. If you watch us live on Thursday night on twitch.tv/aboutbeverages (which we highly recommend) then you already knew that. What did we think? Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's Brut Rosé North Coast Sparkling Wine

How can it be that we are in the last month of the year already? The holidays are rapidly approaching and along with them come the build up, craziness, fun, love, laughter, and of course, delicious beverages we know and love about this time of the year. As we have done all year, we are here to guide you through the maze of wonderful options to help you make a choice that is perfect for however you celebrate the season. To start things off we have decided to visit a bubbly. While this type of beverage is most commonly thought of for end of the year celebrating, you may want to consider one (or two) for the weeks leading up to New Year’s as well. Perhaps even all year round. The beverage we will be trying today is the Trader Joe’s North Coast Reserve Brut Rose. This sparkler is available every year for a few months, usually beginning in early November, and is exclusive to Trader Joe’s.  What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's Big Churn Chardonnay 2016

Sometimes a thought is kicking around in your head for a while. You can’t quite figure out what it is, but that is alright. Eventually you notice it is not as much kicking as it is swirling.  The swirling eventually changes into a tumbling as the idea becomes something that can now be defined with the written word. As this process churns toward a conclusion it will soon become something that can be shared with whoever may want to listen. In this case, for this weeks podcast, we hope that person listening is you. Today we will be trying the Big Churn Chardonnay from California. This particular Chardonnay is made for those who are fans of the oaky style and we tend to fall into that category. What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's Typic Rosé

Did you miss us? At least we didn’t stay away for two years this time. Due to reasons beyond our control, we had to skip a week, but we are back and the first beverage this week we have to share with you will be anything but typical. Or will it? It may not be typical, but it actually will be Typic, Typic rosé wine that is. This is a wine that Keith really enjoyed last year, to the tune of at least 4 bottles, but this is a new year and a new vintage. One never knows what Mother Nature has in store for us from year to year, so continuity is anything but a guarantee. Join us as we delve into this wine for the first time this year to find out if the present reality can match the recollections of the past.  What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's Reserve Barossa Shiraz 2016

Sometimes a beverage comes along that immediately grabs your attention. It could be the latest release from your favorite brewery, a new twist on an old favorite from a trusted distillery, or maybe it is something as simple as the eye catching packaging. This podcast features a wine that made us take immediate notice for two reasons. One, it was made from one of our favorite grapes from a great growing region for this varietal. Two, it is from a trusted source for great wines at value driven prices. The wine we are trying this week is the Trader Joe’s Reserve Shiraz from Barossa in Australia. This bottle would retail from $20-$25 if it wasn’t private labeled exclusively for Trader Joe’s. Listen and drink along with us as we see if this wine has the “legs” to stand on, or at least to cling to the inside of our glasses.  What do you think? Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's 2013 La Paca Spanish Garnacha

With the success of last weeks wine from Trader Joe's, Keith decided we should try another.  Today at the tasting table we have the La Paca Spanish Garnacha.  This particular grape originated in Spain, but goes by Grenache in the other areas where it is cultivated:  Sardinia, the south of France and California's San Joaquin Valley.  Due to it's tolerance for drought/heat and late ripening it has become one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world.  Typically used as part of red blends such as Rioja and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, aged monovarietal wines can cost anywhere from $30-$60.  Time to taste and see if the $7 La Paca brings our palate a glimpse of all this varietal has to offer.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's Pacific Grove California Chardonnay

Ripped from the pages of the latest Trader Joe's Fearless Flyer, today at the tasting tables we have the Pacific Grove California Chardonnay.  Made from 100% Chardonnay grapes, this wine goes through a very unique process of small batch barrel and malolactic fermentation.  These two processes are more common in red wine making and are normally reserved for higher end wines, but at $5.99 and a Chardonnay this wine is neither.  Time to taste and see if all that work was worthwhile or if these grapes should have stayed on the vine.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.
