Give It A Shot - Suntory Roku Gin

Anyone who has spent even a short period of time hanging out with us knows that we are huge fans of gin. We have featured it since the very beginning when we were audio only and we continue to appreciate it to this day. It is so versatile, in both ingredient possibilities and cocktail options, that it will always have a place in our home bars. Recently Andrew came across a gin from a country that we had never had one from before and after perusing the label he realized that it truly was calling out to him. The beverage we are trying on this episode is the Roku Gin from Suntory. Roku means “Six” in Japanese and this gin is made with 6 botanicals that are native to Japan.  What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Hoplark HopTea The Really Hoppy One

“Gee, but it’s great to be back home!” These are the opening lyrics to the song “Trying to Keep the Customer Satisfied” by Simon and Garfunkel, and it is a sentiment we wholeheartedly agree with. Most of the time it is the actual home you return to after a long day. The place where the people who you care about the most are waiting for you. The place where you can relax, unwind, and just be. Other times, as was the case when we played that song to open up our live-stream last Thursday, home was the tasting room. Due to many varying aspects of life, we had missed a few weeks of hanging out, chatting and sharing some new beverages with you. Fortunately we were able to return to our beverage “home” last week and try something new that was discovered by long time friend of the show Eric. He sent Keith a picture of it a few weeks back and without much surprise, it found its way to the tasting table. The beverage we will be trying for this show is the Really Hoppy One Sparkling Hop Tea from Hoplark. It combines two of our favorite things, hops and tea, and is also carbonated, so needless to say the hops, I mean, hopes, are high for this beverage.  What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

It Came From the Archives! Episode 5: Iced Tea

This show originally aired on May 26th of 2009.  With the intense Summer heat still beating down on us, what better time then to make some refreshing iced tea!  In this episode we read some listener email and talk about why sun tea may not be the safest way to brew tea.  We then go to the tasting room where we will be trying four different teas (Young Hyson Green Tea, Darjeeling, China Black Tea and Keemun) in two different ways; hot and over ice.  If you have any ideas for future episodes or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Shot - Lapsang Souchong Tea

One of the great things about trying so many different beverages not only for our site, but also for our own enjoyment, is that you build up a "sensory database" if you will.  You begin to pinpoint more precisely what exactly you are experiencing with each beverage.  Case in point is the tea we have for you today.  Lapsang Souchong is a tea that has been smoked over pine needles giving it a very savory and smoky aroma to be sure.  That very aroma was something reminiscent of some notes found in the Laphroaig Triple Wood Scotch we had at the end of last week.  It was right after that recording we decided to bring this tea to the tasting table to not only enjoy for its surprising complexity, but to confirm the similarities to the scotch.  Time now to get the kettle boiling and settle in for a very hearty cup of tea.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

    Holiday Beverage Fest

    Season's Greetings!

Well, here we are smack dab in the throws of another holiday season.   This time can be hectic as there is always somewhere to be and something to do, but it is also a time to be with family and friends.  A time to share old memories and traditions, and to think about all the possibilities that the future holds.  During this season, we at AboutBeverages.com are also thinking of what beverage our hands might be holding.  We all have our favorites, from hot cocoa to egg nog, cider to a seasonal beer, or perhaps a special cocktail or bottle of bubbly.  In the coming days, we are going to share some of our favorites with you, but more importantly, we want you to share your seasonal favorites with us!  Let us know what your favorite beverage is during the holiday season, no matter what it is.  If there is a story or history behind it, we would love to read about that as well.  So whether it's naughty or nice, let's start a list of liquid holiday cheer that we can check twice, or thrice, even.  Add a comment to this blog post and we will begin to give the gift of refreshment.  If it is a mixed drink or something that needs preparation, remember to share the recipe, as long as it is not a secret.

We look forward to hearing from you!  Happy Holidays!!

Two new studies show a link between caffeine consumption and Alzheimer's disease

Two new studies released just today show a link between caffeine consumption and the treatment or prevention of Alzheimer's disease.  Researchers in Florida found that a daily dose of 500 milligrams of caffeine helped to reverse memory issues in mice.  That's the equivalent of five 8 ounce cups of coffee.  Click the link for the full article which is very detailed and quite interesting.
