Give It A Shot - Stone Brewing and Metallica Enter Night Pilsner

Hush, little listener, don’t say a word. Never mind that opening of the can you heard. On second thought, we should mind the opening of the can we all just heard. That can being opened means we are very close to trying a collaboration beer. This collaboration features one of Andrew’s favorite bands of all time and one of our favorite breweries. They got together and created a Pilsner. A Pilsner admittedly we don’t know much about as they are being very secretive in regards to the contents of its ingredients. If this sounds vaguely familiar to you, it should as the band that had a hand in creating this beer also recently made an appearance on our podcast as co-creator of a whiskey. This time around however, we will be trying the Enter Night Pilsner, brought to us from the creative minds of Stone Brewing and Metallica. About all we know is that the alcohol checks in at 5.7% and it is a Pilsner. What did we think? Give It A Shot - Stone Brewing MoJay IPA

Sometimes the availability of a beer, much like time itself, is fleeting. Through the lens of youth, one looks to the future and it seems endless. In what seems like the blink of an experienced eye we realize that is not the case and no matter what your age tomorrow is promised to no one. On a similar, though not as deeply philosophical scale, a delicious beer being available tomorrow is also promised to no one. In addition to their usual offerings, most breweries now brew beers to only be offered at the brewery or in very limited release. These “one-offs” are most often highly prized and are rewards for those individuals willing to sacrifice their time and a few extra hard-earned dollars to procure them. We are fortunate to have one of these beers on our podcast. This week we will be trying the Mojay IPA from Stone Brewing. It is made with Mosaic hops and according to the people at Stone it brought to mind fresh squeezed orange juice, hence the name.  What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Stone Brewing 22nd Anniversary Anni-Matter Double IPA

Anniversaries can truly be special events. A moment in time to stop and contemplate the way things were, the way things are, and the way things could be someday. Certainly there are many types of anniversaries with sad connotations, but we are not here today to reflect on those. We are here to talk about Stone Brewing and revel in the fact that they are celebrating 22 years of providing us with innovative and delicious tasting beers. From pilsners, to IPA’s, to imperial stouts, they have it all covered. They celebrate their anniversary every year by releasing a beer made specifically for the occasion and that is what we are trying for this podcast. The beer is named Anni-Matter Double IPA, and they are saying it is a haze-free, bold, juicy double IPA.  What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Stone Brewing Woot Stout 2018

We are not sure what the weather is like where you are, but where we are, the temperature easily eclipses 100 degrees on a daily basis. When you add in the humidity from our monsoon season it makes for some unpleasant atmospheric conditions. It certainly is not what some of us would consider Imperial Stout beer drinking weather. Needless to say, when we decide to take on an Imperial Stout at this time of year you know we must have an idea that it is going to be special. That is definitely the case as this week we try the Stone Farking Wheaton Wootstout. It is a collaboration between Drew Curtis, Wil Wheaton, and Greg Koch (of Stone Brewing) and this is the 6th year they have released a version of this beer. We have tried previous versions, but every year they do something different to keep us on our toes.  What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Stone Brewing I'm Peach Double IPA

This podcast features a subject whose time has come. In fact it is long overdue, with many people in this country and around the world saying “it’s about time” or “what took you so long?”. We are talking, of course, about the latest release from Stone Brewing, the I’m Peach Double IPA. The people at Stone have always shown a deft and creative hand when crafting a beer and this time around they have taken on the challenge of adding peach to a double IPA.  What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Stone Brewing Saison du Buff Aged in Red and White Wine Barrels

What is better than one great brewery creating a new beer for its loyal fans? Obviously, it’s when two great breweries get together and create a new beer for their loyal fans. We know this sounds crazy, but what if a third great brewery decided they wanted in on this action? Can it be even exponentially better? Potentially, chaos could ensue as this triumvirate toiled over their concoction, but we would all still keep our fingers crossed and hope that somehow, some way, this could all work out for the betterment of humanity, and of course, the craft beer crazed populace of which we are proud to be a part. These are some of the questions we asked ourselves and points that we pondered as we tried the Saison du Buff, a collaboration beer from Stone, Dogfish Head, and Victory. The version that we tried features its usual blend of herbs, but was also aged in both red and white wine barrels and has been augmented by the addition of brettanomyces.  What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Stone Brewing Delicious IPA Gluten Reduced

There are very few breweries that would use the word delicious in the name of their beer, but being bold and arrogant is something Stone Brewing wears like a badge of honor.  Today at the tasting table we have their Delicious IPA.  Brewed with three different hops (El Dorado, Calypso and the recently named Lemondrop) this beer looks to make a statement on two fronts.  First and foremost being another entry in Stone's great lineup of hophead adored IPAs.  Second they wanted to make a beer that could be enjoyed by those who have gluten intolerance.  Using an enzyme created by White Labs Inc. they still brew using the usual ingredients, but are able to reduce the amount of gluten by over half of what the FDA requires to be called reduced gluten.  Time to taste and find out if all the flavor still remains.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Stone Brewing Enjoy By 2.14.14 Cellared (Unnecessarily)

This is the most forward planning of any show by far that we have ever done!  Today at the tasting table we have the Stone Brewing Enjoy By 2.14.14.  That's right.  I (Andrew) have been cellaring (unnecessarily) this beer for one year.  I had bought several of these when they first came out as I tend to do with the Enjoy By series because they are delicious.  A day or two had passed after Valentine's Day last year when I noticed that I still had one more.  Obviously it still would have been perfectly amazing, but that was when like a thunderbolt of genius/stupidity I had an idea.  Keith and I have often discussed that as double IPAs get older due to the higher hops and malt content they have some flavors in common with a barley wine.  The question then became, "What would happen if we actually cellared a double IPA for an extended period of time?"  The answer comes today at the tasting table in a balance of obvious and surprising.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.
