Give It A Shot - Scapa Glansa Single Malt Scotch

This week the good news is that we are excited to try a new Scotch. The bad news, unfortunately, is that with the discovery of this new (to us) Scotch, we learned that we have to begrudgingly say goodbye to one of our all-time favorites. Through a series of unfortunate events, we have come to learn that the Scapa 16 year Scotch is no longer being produced at the distillery. This was quite a shock to both of us as it has long been one of our favorites. There is even a podcast from 2010 that you can listen to in the archives at AboutBeverages.com to prove it. So we will bid a fond adieu to this spirit, who ironically is now only with us in spirit, and memory of course. You may have a hunch by now that the scotch we are trying may be connected in some way to Scapa and if that is your guess, then you are correct. The beverage that we are trying today is the Scapa Glansa. Glansa is an Old Norse word that means “shining storm-laden skies” and this scotch is the first peated single malt expression from the Orkney island based distillery. What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Glen Elgin 12 Year Speyside Single Malt Scotch

Nothing says the colder days and shorter nights of winter like a whiskey or whisky.  It's a wonderful option year round to be sure, but sometimes certain times of year make it all the more delicious.  At the tasting table today we have the Glen Elgin 12yr Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky.  The distillery was built by Charles Doig in 1898 and was the last until 1958 when Tormore was constructed.  Depending on the region of Scotland you can expect certain characteristics:  lowlands tend to be lighter, the islands of Islay and Skye feature more peat and seaspray and the highlands tend to be more herbal and smooth.  For the Speyside we are sampling today we are looking for more classic honey and fruit notes to go with the peat.  Time to taste and see if this Scotch brings all the flavors of this region to the party.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

It Came From the Archives! Episode 23: Scotch Part 1

This show originally aired on March 14th, 2011.  Welcome to episode 23 of the AboutBeverages.com podcast!  In this epsiode we will be talking about, and enjoying, some single malt scotch.  Ten scotches to be exact.  We are going to divide this podcast into two parts and try five scotches in each part.  In part one, we will begin by discussing what makes scotch unique and different from other types of whiskey.  Then it's off to the tasting room to begin tasting the first five single malt scotches.  Next week in part two of the podcast, we will try the remaining five single malt scotches along with some final discussion about our favorites.  This two part podcast series would not have been possible without the help of a friend and contributor to the show, Fitz.  Keith and Fitz both work for Trader Joe's and they have had numerous discussions About Beverages, one of which obviously involved scotch.  Fitz has a great deal of passion not only for a wide variety of beverages, but for food as well.  He has a highly developed sense of taste, a vast internal database of prior experience from which to draw, and a keen knack for pairing libations of all kinds with a wide array of foods.  We were happy to welcome him to the tasting room for all of these reasons and, in all honesty, because he graciously offered to provide us with all of the scotches that we tried.  Without further adieu, let's taste some scotch!  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.
