Pumpkin Beers 2015 - Wasatch, Almanac and We Choose This Year's Champion

We hope you are ready for some more pumpkin, because this week brings part two of our world famous (famous in our world, and that's what really matters to us at About Beverages) pumpkin beer podcast.  Last weeks episode saw us make our way through the first four selections for this year, and this week we will complete our quest to crown the newest pumpkin beer winner and champion. This weeks podcast features the Black O' Lantern pumpkin stout from Wasatch and Almanac's Heirloom Pumpkin barleywine-style ale.  We will also have a re-cap of all six of the beers we tried and we will pick our favorite for this year. We were really happy with the variety of beers we brought to the table this year because we felt that they covered a very broad spectrum of flavor profiles.

We will reveal our favorite, but which pumpkin beer is your go-to at this time of the year? What should we try next year or try to get this year before it disappears? Please send us an e-mail, leave a comment, or hit us up on Twitter with your thoughts and suggestions.

Pumpkin Beers 2015 - Saranac, Alaskan, Jolly Pumpkin and Ballast Point

Well, it is that time of year again. There is talk of leaves changing color, cooler weather is on the way, football games with meaning are finally being played, and the About Beverages Pumpkin Beer Podcast is here for your enjoyment. It is hard to believe, but this is the 6th year we have had a podcast devoted solely to pumpkin beer. We always enjoy trying and discussing beverages of all kinds with you, but one of us enjoys this particular podcast a little more than the other. You may already know who that is, but if you don’t, it won’t take you long to figure it out. That being said, we have a good time doing this seasonally themed podcast every year.

This year, we have six new-to-us pumpkin beers that we will be trying. Since we are trying a cornucopia of beers this year, all made with pumpkin, we decided to split this into two podcasts. This week’s episode will cover the first four, while next weeks will be the remaining two plus discussion and the big reveal of this year’s winner. This year we did something a little different and decided not to bring back any of our champions from years past. This leaves one to wonder, “What has become of the previous year’s winners?” The choice we made was to officially “retire” the Punkin Ale from Dogfish (Champion in 2010 and 2011, runner-up 2012), and the Smashed Pumpkin from Shipyard (Champion 2012, 2013, and 2014). They have become the inaugural members of our “Pumpkin Beer Hall of Fame.” If they were sports jerseys, they would hang from the rafters in the tasting room for all to see. As great as they are, we have decided to give six new beers a shot at our coveted pumpkin beer crown.

The beers we will be trying this week are the Saranac Pumpkin Ale, Alaskan Pumpkin Ale, Jolly Pumpkin La Parcela No. 1 Pumpkin Ale, and Ballast Point Pumpkin Down Scotch Ale.  We invite you to listen or watch as we begin this journey to what we hope will be a new and delicious champion.

Give It A Shot - Modern Times Beer Oneida Seasonal Pale Ale

Modern Times Beer has become another one of our "must have breweries" whenever Keith or I travel to California with our families.  From the light to the dark they have found a wonderful balance of flavor in all that they create.  Today at the tasting table we have the Oneida Seasonal Pale Ale.  Using three hops, Hallertau Blanc, Cascade and the experimental 05256, this sessionable beer is looking to pack quite a fruity punch from just 50 IBUs.  Time to taste and see if just like San Diego this beer is made to "..always go down smooth."  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Victory Hop Ranch Imperial IPA

For those of you that get our weekly email, we are sorry to report that the Sierra Nevada Hoppy Lager did not get recorded and has been lost.  We will at some point soon post the tasting notes for it, but until then to ease your sadness we have another beer at the tasting table.  The Victory Hop Ranch Imperial IPA is their thank you to all the hard working hop ranchers that keep them supplied with hops.  This beer features two of them, Mosaic and Azacca, in their whole cone form.  To move the hops even more to the forefront they went with a very simple grain bill, just pilsner malt.  Time to taste and see if this 9% ABV imperial IPA is a fitting salute to the hop harvesters.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Left Hand Brewing Fade to Black Volume One (2014)

One of the most talked about and revered beers on this website is finally back!  At the tasting table today we have the Left Hand Brewing Fade to Black Volume One.  The series started back in 2009 with this Foreign Export Stout and changed with every passing year just like the seasons.  The offerings have also included a Smoked Baltic Porter, a Pepper Porter, a Rocky Mountain Black Ale and a Black Rye Ale.  We were excited every year to try whatever the new offering might be, but it was Volume One that we always longed to have dance across our palate one more time.  We have finally gotten our wish, but will our memory be better than what's before us in the glass?  Time to taste and see if as Thomas Wolfe wrote, You Can't Go Home Again.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Pumpkin Beers 2014 Part 3 - Howe Sound Brewing Pumpkineater and Shipyard Brewing Smashed Pumpkin

Four pumpkin beers entered the tasting arena over the last two weeks to compete against the current champion Puglsey's Signature Series Smashed Pumpkin.  One more will be added to the challenger ranks today and then a decision will be made.  That beer is the Pumpkineater Imperial Pumpkin Ale from Howe Sound Brewing.  It is part of the John Mitchell series and uses fresh roasted pumpkin along with the usual accompaniment of spices.  The second and final beer will be The Shipyard Brewing Pugsley's Signature Series Smashed Pumpkin.  We have been enjoying and talking about this one for several years now, but for those of you just joining us we will give a rundown.  Using pumpkin (of course) and a blend of Willamette and Hallertau hops this beers always brings the great balance of spice, pumpkin and buttery pie crust.  Time to taste and commence a final discussion about all six beers leading up to our championship decision.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Pumpkin Beers 2014 Part 2 - Southern Tier Brewing Pumking Imperial Pumpkin Ale and Warlock Imperial Pumpkin Stout

Part two of our Pumpkin Beer Fest 2014 is doubling down on two things:  We have two beers from the same brewery and have gone bigger with our style as both are imperial.  At the tasting table today we have the Pumking Imperial Pumpkin Ale and the Warlock Imperial Pumpkin Stout from Southern Tier Brewing.  They are both seasonal (obviously), but are separated into two different categories on their website.  The Pumking is part of their seasonal Imperial Series and the Warlock is part of their Blackwater Series.  Both have raised the alcohol to a nice 8.6% ABV and use pumpkin during part of the brewing process.  This may seem like a nit picky thing to some, but the use of pumpkin when done properly will add to the overall flavor, mouthfeel and harmony of all the other flavors.  Time to carve open another couple bottles and see if either have a chance of becoming the champion for this year.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Pumpkin Beers 2014 Part 1 - KBC Pumpkin Ale and Magic Hat Brewing Wilhelm Scream Pumpkin Ale

It's that time year once again when the leaves begin to change colors and thoughts of colder weather and the harvest come to the forefront.  Here in Arizona very little of that is true, but we try to think positive and be excited those times are only a couple months away.  To help kickoff the fall season it is time once again for our series of Pumpkin Beers Show!  The 2014 edition will feature three parts with a total of five new beers and of course the returning champion, Pugsley’s Signature Series Smashed Pumpkin from Shipyard Brewing.  We start part one today with the Wilhelm Scream Pumpkin Ale from Magic Hat Brewing and the KBC Pumpkin Ale from Trader Joe's.  As we have done for the past several years we will taste all of the beers including the previous years champion before deciding on which beer is victorious.  The criteria is a bit loose, but we make our choice based on which of these beers makes the best use of not only pumpkin, but the incorporation of spices.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.
