Give It A Shot - Cotillion California Pinot Noir 2016

Welcome to the second phase of our Pinot Noir comparison. To bring you up to speed, in our previous podcast, we tried the Erath Pinot Noir, which is from Oregon. If you want to know what we thought about it, please see the previous post and watch or listen as we discuss our perceptions. As we mentioned, we decided to stay with the same grape for the subsequent podcast, but decided to check out a California representation of this delicate varietal. The wine we will be trying is the Cotillion Pinot Noir. It is a Trader Joe’s exclusive and has long been a Keith recommendation for those who are looking for a Pinot Noir of a certain price and style. It has been about 2 years since he last tried it and Andrew has never tried it, so it should make for some good discussion. What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Erath Oregon Pinot Noir 2016

We know that while we are truly about all types of beverages, we do tend to skew more often toward beer. It is easy to buy just one for us to talk about on a podcast and with few exceptions, the price structure is usually just what we are looking for. However, this week our fancies take a turn for the grape at About Beverages. This podcast (and the one which follows it) came about as we tried to decide what the menu would be for our Thursday night livestream session. We won’t bore you with the details, but the end result was that we would try wines this week. We settled on the Pinot Noir varietal and decided to compare and contrast the Oregon and California styles. We decided to start with the selection from Oregon and the one we chose was the Erath Pinot Noir. This is the 2016 vintage and usually runs right about $15 or $16. What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - A to Z Winery Pinot Noir Rosé

Recently we tried a rose wine that did not leave an indelible impression upon our palates. The previous years version had been quite enjoyable, but the current version could not replicate the gustatory memory as had been hoped. We didn’t want too much time to pass before delving back into the rose section of the wine cellar, so this week we bring you our first attempt at finding “Rose Redemption.” We will be trying a Pinot Noir rose from A to Z Wineworks out of Newberg Oregon. This is the 2016 vintage (the 2017 is out now as well) and was purchased for an amazing price.  What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Shot - 2010 Affentaler Pinot Noir

The 2010 Affentaler Pinot Noir is grown in Germany's southern most wine growing region known as Baden.  This area which is part of the Rhine Valley and is at the foot of the Black Forest has become know for its Rieslings and Pinot Noirs.  Affentaler means "Valley of the Monkey" hence the symbolic copper monkey logo which has been around since 1949.  Most of our knowledge of Pinot Noir comes from the California and Oregon expression of this grape, so it will be interesting to see what Germany's terroir has to offer.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Shot - 2011 Cloud Break Pinot Noir

Can a $7.99 Pinot Noir be any good?  That's what we will explore today on the show as we taste the 2011 Cloud Break Pinot Noir.  For myself it is rare to find a Pinot Noir of any quality for less than one or two Coppolas.  Once you watch the video that last sentence will make complete sense.  You can find just about any style of wine under the Cloud Break label.  I guess it shouldn't be any surprise that they are all priced at $7.99 as well.  Look for more from this label in the future as long as this one doesn't disappoint.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Shot - Kim Crawford Marlborough Pinot Noir 2010

It is time once again for our "Give It A Shot" podcast where we share with you, our valued listener, something we discovered that needs to be shared immediately.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.  Switching hemispheres and styles for the show today we head down to New Zealand.  Specifically the Marlborough region for the Kim Crawford Pinot Noir 2010.  Our first experience with this winemaker was with their Sauvignon Blanc which if you haven't had it, is very good and not to be missed.  Obviously these are different grapes varieties, but coming from the same region it will be interesting to see if any similar terroir comes through on the palate.

Wine deals coming to a store near you!

Top wineries are beginning to sell their wines at a much reduced rate due to overstock.  In a recent article from MSNBC small business, Pinot Noir grapes that used to be sold for nearly $5,000 a ton are now selling for closer to $2,500.  Many winemakers are being left with overstock of their wines priced above $20 due to the current economic climate.  What does this mean for the consumer?  It means great quality wines can be had for a much better price.  Click the link for the full article.
