Give It A Shot - Modern Times Beer Mega Black House Imperial Stout

This week at About Beverages, we will be sharing not one, but two new things with you, our valued listener/viewer! The first is something we have been searching for now for several years. It’s not a beverage, but it is something we hope you will enjoy each time you listen to our podcast. Since we want to have our beverage community involved in everything we do, at various times in the past we have reached out to any musicians in our audience who may have wanted to contribute any snippets of instrumental music that we could use on our show. Well, one of our friends, and now with his musical contribution, “Friend of the Show,” Dave in Nevada, had us listen to something he and his band recorded almost 20 years ago that he felt would be perfect. After listening, we agree! This weeks podcast will be the first time we are using his music on our show.  We are pretty excited about it, and in the near future, we may be giving away some of his CDs that include this song. We will have more on that later as we work out the details.

As for the beverage we trying, it is another offering from one of our new favorite breweries, Modern Times in San Diego. It is from their Special Release Series and is called Mega Black House Stout. This beer is available for a limited time and is an imperialized version of their Black House stout, which is available year round. Coffee? Beer? Together? This sounds like a challenge that we are more than happy to take on, and we did.

Give It A Shot - Odell Brewing 180 Shilling

It's always an exciting time in the tasting room when one of our favorite breweries puts out something new.  That's exactly what we have today with the Odell Brewing 180 Shilling.  In honor of their 25th anniversary they decided to not only brew a double sized version of their very first beer, the 90 shilling, but also to age it on oak.  Time to taste and find out if this limited release batch is worthy of its silver anniversary status or if the 180 Shilling is just four pounds over priced.  One last note before you even ask.  Yes, my shilling to pounds conversion math is pretty accurate.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Mikkeller and Anchorage Brewing Invasion Farmhouse IPA

Continuing the trend you see a lot of in the craft beer industry, the Danish Brewery Mikkeller and Anchorage Brewing did a collaboration of sorts here in the US.  The Invasion Farmhouse IPA is not just any old IPA.  Sure it has the usual hop quotient you would expect from a brewery like Mikkeller, but with the addition of some barrel aged funk from Anchorage.  That funk comes from just what you'd expect when someone mentions farmhouse;  Brettanomyces.  Just what kind of flavor will we get from the Brett is anybodies guess.  If it's a shorter aging period we could get more of the passion fruit and citrus.  If they let this sit awhile we could get some downright funky barnyard.  One quick note before you even ask, yes funky barnyard would be a good name for a band involving a fiddle and a banjo.  Time to taste and see if this collaboration is just the right balance of both styles.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Santa Fe Brewing Saison 88

We figured what better way to kick off bringing new content back to the site after a two week hiatus than to crack open an anniversary beer.  It's the 25th Anniversary beer from Santa Fe Brewing called Saison 88.  We had two reactions when we heard about this beer:  "An anniversary saison could be good." and "Santa Fe Brewing has been around for 25 years!?!"  After we got past those initial reactions, we decided to settle in and see if a farmhouse ale at a sessionable 5.5% is what we are looking for as this monsoon season comes to a close.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Dogfish Head Sah'Tea

If you are in the mood for something out of the ordinary and all you've had as of late are summer beers, then their is no brewery better to turn to then Dogfish Head.  The off-centered ale that hits our tasting table today is their Sah'Tea.  The traditional beer this is inspired by is called Sahti and was originally made in Finland.  It used the usual types of grains you would expect, but then was flavored with juniper berries.  We tried this style late last year in the form of the Norse Legend from Sam Adams.  While that one stayed more traditional, Dogfish decided to put their unique spin on it and infuse their's with juniper berries and chai tea.  Hence the change in the spelling of the name to Sah'Tea.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.
