Give It A Shot - Harpoon Take 5 Session IPA

Call me Ishmael.  Better yet, call us both lucky that today at the tasting table we have a "white whale" of a beer for those of us in the southwest.  The Harpoon Take 5 Session IPA is the next beer in our East Coast Swing thanks to friend of the show Charlie.  We are big fans of the great hop flavor and reasonable ABV that many from this style have been providing as of late.  With any luck we've caught another great one.  Only problem is once it's gone we don't have anymore!  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Flying Dog Brewing Snake Dog IPA

If you looked up the word unique in the dictionary you might find a picture of a beer from Flying Dog Brewing.  Located in Frederick, Maryland the label art for their beer is done by Ralph Steadman, a longtime friend of Hunter S. Thompson who had become friends with George Stranahan the founder of Flying Dog in the late 1960s.  Now that we have discussed the outside of the bottle it's time to talk about what's inside and that's what really counts.  Today at the tasting table we have the Snake Dog IPA.  Self declared by the brewery to be their resident "hop monster" this beer gets its character from a duo of hops;  Warrior and Columbus.  They may have their original roots in Colorado, but the flavor of the previous beers we have tried has always been more of an east coast style.  Time to taste and see if this beer would make a good companion for our next trip to Vegas or if it only brings about fear and loathing.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Stone Brewing Delicious IPA Gluten Reduced

There are very few breweries that would use the word delicious in the name of their beer, but being bold and arrogant is something Stone Brewing wears like a badge of honor.  Today at the tasting table we have their Delicious IPA.  Brewed with three different hops (El Dorado, Calypso and the recently named Lemondrop) this beer looks to make a statement on two fronts.  First and foremost being another entry in Stone's great lineup of hophead adored IPAs.  Second they wanted to make a beer that could be enjoyed by those who have gluten intolerance.  Using an enzyme created by White Labs Inc. they still brew using the usual ingredients, but are able to reduce the amount of gluten by over half of what the FDA requires to be called reduced gluten.  Time to taste and find out if all the flavor still remains.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Sierra Nevada Hop Hunter IPA

Spring is in the air and with it comes a fair amount of baseball conversation to start the show, but eventually we get to the beer at hand.  At the tasting table today we have the Sierra Nevada Hop Hunter IPA.  It's a newly created year round release that uses a method of steam distilling wet hops before they even leave the fields.  This custom process is used to gather hop oil in its purest form giving you the "fresh hop" taste most brewers can only do during picking season.  This oil combined with their whole cone hops should bring plenty of flavor to the party.  Time to taste and see if the "hunt" was a success or if this process is simply all wet.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Alpine Beer Company Nelson Golden Rye IPA

This week the California Beer Train makes a stop in Alpine for what we have been told is one of the best brewers of IPAs.  The Alpine Beer Company opened its doors in the fall of 2002 and it didn't take long for word to spread to local hop heads that this was a place not to be missed.  At the tasting table today we have one of their seasonal beers or as they like to say, "Beers we brew as often as we can, but not all the time".  The Nelson Golden Rye IPA is named after the New Zealand hop, Nelson Sauvin, which is used throughout the brewing and dry-hopping process.  Time to taste and see if this beer lives up to all the hype we're giving it.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Live on Location at Tap and Bottle Featuring Destihl Brewing & Four Peaks Part Three

We are Live on Location this week at Tap and Bottle for the final part of our three show series.  Owners Scott and Rebecca kept the conversation going for part two as we discussed everything from session beers (of which two were tried) to sours to gluten free options of which they have many.  Also of note is that we talk a bit about the Daytime IPA from Lagunitas that just won the gold medal in the session beer category at the World Beer Cup.  Getting back to the tasting of beers, first up was the Counter ClockWeisse from Destihl Brewing.  Part of their Wild Sour Series this beer is "uber" sessionable at only 3% ABV.  The second and final beer of our show is the Four Peaks Brewing Short Hop ISA (India Session Ale).  This seasonal offering is made to coincide with the start of baseball season.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Live on Location" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

It Came From the Archives! Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPA

This show originally aired on March 15th 2012.  I can't believe I didn't realize this earlier, but this has been IPA week here at the website.  So to finish things off we have the Ruthless Rye IPA from Sierra Nevada.  Rye beers are something we have only recently been exposed to, but so far seem to be quite interesting.  It may seem obvious, but what makes a rye beer is not that the brewer loves the song American Pie by Don Mclean, but that they use a significant amount of rye as part of the grain bill.

Give It A Shot - Deschutes Brewery Fresh Squeezed IPA

One of the more recent trends in the area of IPAs is the fresh hopped IPA.  Whether it's Stone Brewing and their Enjoy By IPA or Port Brewing and their High Tide IPA, it's all about getting the beer to you as fast as possible to keep all of the delicious hop oils at their peak of goodness.  You should always look at bottling dates or best before dates when it comes to beer, but it is even more essential when it comes to IPAs.  They are not meant to age, but are to be enjoyed immediately.  The Fresh Squeezed IPA from Deschutes Brewery is no exception.  Time to taste and hope we haven't waited too long.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.
