Give It A Shot - Modern Times Beer Membata Coffee Stout

We know that it is getting down to the wire, but better late than never as we continue on with our Thanksgiving suggestions podcasts. We change gears as we move to the beer category to discuss something we think could be a part of your celebration. We will be trying the Membata from Modern Times, which many of you know is one of our favorite breweries. This beer is a coffee stout, but other than that, we were not able to find too much information. Based on our experience and our familiarity with Modern Times, we are hoping that this beer helps you take the step from beverages paired with turkey and sides to beverages paired with dessert and eventually to heavier sippers consumed slowly around the glow of the fire. At least those are our plans...  What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Modern Times Madeira Barrel Aged Colombian Coffee

We love coffee.  Working at Arbuckle Coffee as Keith and I did (I still do) for so many years is what set us on the journey to open up our palates.  We also love things that have been barrel aged.  I don't have any good historical tie in for that but I do have an equation that seems appropriate.  Barrel aging = delicious.  The folks at Modern Times in Point Loma, California have brought those two loves together in a rather unique way.  At the tasting table today we have their Madeira Barrel Aged Colombian Coffee.  How do they do it?  They take green unroasted coffee beans and age them in a Madeira wine barrel for as long as they feel necessary.  Time to taste and see if some additional character is brought to the coffee or it's simply bean there done that.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Modern Times Beer Black House Coffee Stout

We have not even made an attempt to keep secret our enjoyment of Modern Times Beer and our longing for them to start distributing to Arizona.  Founded just over a year ago by Jacob McKean a long-time homebrewer and former Stone Brewing Co. employee.  Most of their lineup and limited releases to this point have been heavily weighted toward beers involving copious amounts of hops, hops and more hops.  Today at the tasting table we have one of their year round releases that diverges a bit from that formula.  The Black House Coffee Stout uses two types of coffee (Ethiopian and Sumatra) roasted in house as part of the recipe.  This also pushes forward our website's continued search for great beer found in a can.  Time to taste and see if this lives up to our already highly caffeinated expectations.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

It Came From the Archives! Episode 18 Decaf Coffee

This show originally aired July 26th of 2010.  In this installment we will dive head first into the question that needs to be answered.  Do decaf drinkers need to be short changed when it comes to the flavor of their coffee?  To answer this question we will discuss the many processes used to decaffeinate beans and then head off to the tasting room.  There Keith will taste two different coffees, one regular and one decaf, and see if he can tell the difference.  We had initially thought about comparing other types of beverages in the same manner, but we thought it might run a little long for this podcast.  If you have any ideas for future episodes or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Shot - Santa Fe Brewing Imperial Java Stout

Santa Fe Brewing is throwing down the gauntlet of what can be put in a can with their Imperial Java Stout.  Our ongoing quest has been sparked thanks to one of our listeners, Gary, who purchased a six pack and was kind enough to give us one.  This seasonal stout is brewed with organically grown East Timor coffee beans blended with New Guinea coffee beans.  The ABV on this beer being 8% seems a little on the low side for an imperial beer, but if the body is truly "as full as chocolate bread pudding", it won't matter.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.
