Give It A Shot - Angel's Envy Bourbon Finished in Port Wine Barrels

It has been far too long since we have posted a show and we thought what better way to make up for that than enjoying some bourbon with all of you.  The Angel's Envy bourbon from Lincoln Henderson comes in three expressions:  Cask Strength, Rye Finished in Rum Barrels and the one we have today which is finished in Port Barrels.  The aging process on the bourbon side takes about six years while the finishing in port barrels is only three to six months depending on taste.  Time now for us to follow their lead, give this one a taste, and see if the angel's are right to be envious.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Burly Gentlemen Whiskey Mixed Drink

The Burly Gentlemen.  These two words when put together simply cry out to be the name of a mixed drink.  Not just any mixed drink mind you.  A blended concoction that is sweet, smooth and delicious while also giving you a stern smoky kick that lets you know it's business time!  Now that you're done laughing after watching the Flight of the Conchords video we linked to, we can begin to talk about what comprises the drink.  Bourbon (Jefferson's), Scotch (Laphroaig Triple Wood), Agave nectar and Regan's Orange Bitters No. 6.  While it has some things in common with a traditional Manhattan, the addition of scotch adds a little smoke and the gave nectar adds a touch of extra sweetness.  Mix one up with us and taste along as we explore this new cocktail together.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Shot - Jefferson's Small Batch Bourbon (Video)

It is time once again for our "Give It A Shot" podcast where we share with you, our valued listener, something we discovered that needs to be shared immediately.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.  When we're not tasting beer apparently we seem to have a soft spot for bourbon and that's exactly what we'll be trying today.  Jefferson's small batch bourbon is distilled by McLain and Kyne using limestone water from Kentucky.  What does "Very Small Batch Bourbon" actually mean?  Well instead of selecting 200-300 barrels of whiskey to be blended together for small batch bourbon, they only use 8-12 barrels of varying ages to ensure consistency.  Let's see if that pays off in the flavor.

AboutBeverages.com Podcast: Give It A Shot - Paddleford Creek Bourbon (Video)

It is time once again for our "Give It A Shot" podcast where we share with you, our valued listener, something we discovered that needs to be shared immediately.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.  Bourbon is the beverage of choice for the podcast today and what better way to celebrate our love for the oak aged libation than with our first video!  We were intially going to make the podcast on Thursday be our first video feature, but we couldn't wait.  Paddleford Creek is a small batch borbon that is quite difficult to find any information about.  Seriously.  I have been doing research for days.  Other than the info on the bottle (charcoal filtered, 83 proof, etc.) everything else is shrouded in mystery.  Best guess I have seen is that it's made by Phillips Distilling Company from Wisconsin.  That could be good or bad.  One thing this Bears fan knows for sure is that a lot of this whiskey is being sold to drown the sorrows of many a Packer fan today.  An audio only version of the podcast is still available for download.

Dave's "So Cal" Blog - Ultimate Manhattan

I highly recommend this as a Top 10 Fall Cocktail.  Keith and Andrew, I want you to “Give It a Shot” and let me know...

    Dave's Ultimate Manhattan

    Ingredients:

2 1/2 oz Makers Mark Bourbon Whiskey
    1 oz Sweet Vermouth
1 dash Regans' Orange Bitters No. 6
1 splash Maraschino juice (a historical tip from the UC Special)
1 whole Maraschino Cherry with stem

    Directions:
    1.    Partially fill a cocktail shaker with ice and over fill a martini glass with crushed ice.
    2.    Put first four ingredients into the shaker, cap and shake briskly. (Note: Stand back when you dash the bitters.)
    3.    Dump the ice from the glass.
    4.    Fill the glass with strained contents from the cocktail shaker.
    5.    Garnish with cherry.

    Comments:
    1.    Sip the cocktail.
    2.    Note the warm brown fall color of the cocktail immediately after the pour.  It almost appears "cloudy" and with an autumn sunset around the cherry. If you sip slowly enough the clarity of the cocktail will improve.
    3.    I enjoy it paired with crackers and cheese. This drink holds up nicely to blue, and other hard cheeses such as Manchego.  What's your favorite fall cocktail?  Add a comment to this post or have a seat at The Round Table and start a discussion.

    Imbibe with impunity.

    Dave
