Give It A Shot - Two Roads Brewing Hefeweizen

Two Roads Brewing No Limits Hefeweizen arrived at our tasting table today by way more than two roads.  It was brought here from the east coast thanks to our good friend of the show Charlie who has been supplying us with many of our beverages as of late.  This brewery out of Stratford Connecticut has as they say taken the "bahn" less traveled to create a classic Bavarian wheat brew.  Will this 5% ABV beer truly be as "limitless" as Bradley Cooper?  Time to taste and find out.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Harpoon Take 5 Session IPA

Call me Ishmael.  Better yet, call us both lucky that today at the tasting table we have a "white whale" of a beer for those of us in the southwest.  The Harpoon Take 5 Session IPA is the next beer in our East Coast Swing thanks to friend of the show Charlie.  We are big fans of the great hop flavor and reasonable ABV that many from this style have been providing as of late.  With any luck we've caught another great one.  Only problem is once it's gone we don't have anymore!  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Yuengling Traditional Amber Lager

Thanks to longtime listener and friend of the show Charlie we are going to embark on a mostly beer tasting of the east coast.  Since he was on his way back to Arizona he thought it would be cool for us to try a variety of things we just can't find here.  After sizing up the beverage bounty that lay before us we decided to go with not only the most well know, but also what we are sure is the lightest of the bunch.  Yuengling has been around since 1829 and is America's oldest operating brewery.  They make a variety of beers including a Black and Tan which I thought sounded interesting.  The Traditional Amber Lager is not only their number one seller, but also the beer were given to try.  Time to taste and get our "East Coast Swing" series rolling.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Pumpkin Beers 2015 - Wasatch, Almanac and We Choose This Year's Champion

We hope you are ready for some more pumpkin, because this week brings part two of our world famous (famous in our world, and that's what really matters to us at About Beverages) pumpkin beer podcast.  Last weeks episode saw us make our way through the first four selections for this year, and this week we will complete our quest to crown the newest pumpkin beer winner and champion. This weeks podcast features the Black O' Lantern pumpkin stout from Wasatch and Almanac's Heirloom Pumpkin barleywine-style ale.  We will also have a re-cap of all six of the beers we tried and we will pick our favorite for this year. We were really happy with the variety of beers we brought to the table this year because we felt that they covered a very broad spectrum of flavor profiles.

We will reveal our favorite, but which pumpkin beer is your go-to at this time of the year? What should we try next year or try to get this year before it disappears? Please send us an e-mail, leave a comment, or hit us up on Twitter with your thoughts and suggestions.

Pumpkin Beers 2015 - Saranac, Alaskan, Jolly Pumpkin and Ballast Point

Well, it is that time of year again. There is talk of leaves changing color, cooler weather is on the way, football games with meaning are finally being played, and the About Beverages Pumpkin Beer Podcast is here for your enjoyment. It is hard to believe, but this is the 6th year we have had a podcast devoted solely to pumpkin beer. We always enjoy trying and discussing beverages of all kinds with you, but one of us enjoys this particular podcast a little more than the other. You may already know who that is, but if you don’t, it won’t take you long to figure it out. That being said, we have a good time doing this seasonally themed podcast every year.

This year, we have six new-to-us pumpkin beers that we will be trying. Since we are trying a cornucopia of beers this year, all made with pumpkin, we decided to split this into two podcasts. This week’s episode will cover the first four, while next weeks will be the remaining two plus discussion and the big reveal of this year’s winner. This year we did something a little different and decided not to bring back any of our champions from years past. This leaves one to wonder, “What has become of the previous year’s winners?” The choice we made was to officially “retire” the Punkin Ale from Dogfish (Champion in 2010 and 2011, runner-up 2012), and the Smashed Pumpkin from Shipyard (Champion 2012, 2013, and 2014). They have become the inaugural members of our “Pumpkin Beer Hall of Fame.” If they were sports jerseys, they would hang from the rafters in the tasting room for all to see. As great as they are, we have decided to give six new beers a shot at our coveted pumpkin beer crown.

The beers we will be trying this week are the Saranac Pumpkin Ale, Alaskan Pumpkin Ale, Jolly Pumpkin La Parcela No. 1 Pumpkin Ale, and Ballast Point Pumpkin Down Scotch Ale.  We invite you to listen or watch as we begin this journey to what we hope will be a new and delicious champion.

Give It A Shot - Modern Times Beer Mega Black House Imperial Stout

This week at About Beverages, we will be sharing not one, but two new things with you, our valued listener/viewer! The first is something we have been searching for now for several years. It’s not a beverage, but it is something we hope you will enjoy each time you listen to our podcast. Since we want to have our beverage community involved in everything we do, at various times in the past we have reached out to any musicians in our audience who may have wanted to contribute any snippets of instrumental music that we could use on our show. Well, one of our friends, and now with his musical contribution, “Friend of the Show,” Dave in Nevada, had us listen to something he and his band recorded almost 20 years ago that he felt would be perfect. After listening, we agree! This weeks podcast will be the first time we are using his music on our show.  We are pretty excited about it, and in the near future, we may be giving away some of his CDs that include this song. We will have more on that later as we work out the details.

As for the beverage we trying, it is another offering from one of our new favorite breweries, Modern Times in San Diego. It is from their Special Release Series and is called Mega Black House Stout. This beer is available for a limited time and is an imperialized version of their Black House stout, which is available year round. Coffee? Beer? Together? This sounds like a challenge that we are more than happy to take on, and we did.

Give It A Shot - Anchorage / Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Boreal Saison

Collaborations can go either way.  Peanut butter and chocolate?  Great collaboration!  Puff Daddy and Jimmy Page?  Terrible collaboration for an even more terrible movie!  Two brothers tasting beverages and sharing good times?  Totally fantastic!  A farmhouse saison created by two well respected breweries?  That question will be answered today at the tasting table.  Anchorage and Jolly Pumpkin Brewing bring us a unique collaboration called the Calabaza Boreal.  The unique part of this brew is not that Gabe of Anchorage and Ron of Jolly Pumpkin created a beer together, but that they each brewed a batch at their own facility to give their personal spin on the same recipe.  As you can see from the video we are trying the Anchorage version which uses a different primary yeast and some of Jolly Pumpkin's own Oro de Calabaza right from the barrel.  Time to taste and see if we are glad these to were able to come together or if they should have gone their separate ways.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Prairie Artisan Ales Standard Hoppy Farmhouse Ale

What's the best way to start a show about a beer brewed in Oklahoma?  With some Jurassic Park movie series and DTS sound discussion of course!  Who knows how it came up, but that's what happens when the liquid libations start flowing.  Today at that tasting table we have the Prairie Artisan Ales Standard Hoppy Farmhouse Ale.  Not unlike this website the brewery was started by two brothers who wanted to do something awesome.  I'm sure that's the rallying cry of many people, but these two put their money where there mouth is and funded the brewery themselves.  With their massive lineup of beers the choice of which one to try first from a new brewery can be a daunting task.  Luckily Keith was able to get some sage advice once again from Mike at Olive Tree Market in San Diego and a choice was made.  Using an unfamiliar New Zealand hop, Moteuka, this beer looks to have a balance of funk, spice and lime citrus.  Time to taste and see if this beer leaves us feeling that Oklahoma's OK.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.
