What's on tap for the week of February 22nd - February 28th 2015

Just a little reminder of what will be going on at AboutBeverages.com for the week of February 22nd - February 28th 2015.   To spice things up a bit this week we decided to uncork a bottle of wine at the tasting table.  It happens this Wednesday with a "Give It A Shot" featuring the Sebastiani 2012 Zinfandel.  This is a Trader Joe's "hustle buy" and as such is available in limited quantities at their stores.  It can be found elsewhere, but at a higher price.  Make sure you're following us on twitter for all of our other beverage tastings and info.  Click the link here to get to our twitter page.  Also, don't forget to check out our channel on youtube and if you go to our website from your mobile phone you can also get our app!

Give It A Shot - Victory Hop Ranch Imperial IPA

For those of you that get our weekly email, we are sorry to report that the Sierra Nevada Hoppy Lager did not get recorded and has been lost.  We will at some point soon post the tasting notes for it, but until then to ease your sadness we have another beer at the tasting table.  The Victory Hop Ranch Imperial IPA is their thank you to all the hard working hop ranchers that keep them supplied with hops.  This beer features two of them, Mosaic and Azacca, in their whole cone form.  To move the hops even more to the forefront they went with a very simple grain bill, just pilsner malt.  Time to taste and see if this 9% ABV imperial IPA is a fitting salute to the hop harvesters.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Glen Elgin 12 Year Speyside Single Malt Scotch

Nothing says the colder days and shorter nights of winter like a whiskey or whisky.  It's a wonderful option year round to be sure, but sometimes certain times of year make it all the more delicious.  At the tasting table today we have the Glen Elgin 12yr Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky.  The distillery was built by Charles Doig in 1898 and was the last until 1958 when Tormore was constructed.  Depending on the region of Scotland you can expect certain characteristics:  lowlands tend to be lighter, the islands of Islay and Skye feature more peat and seaspray and the highlands tend to be more herbal and smooth.  For the Speyside we are sampling today we are looking for more classic honey and fruit notes to go with the peat.  Time to taste and see if this Scotch brings all the flavors of this region to the party.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

What's on tap for the week of December 7th - December 13th 2014

Just a little reminder of what will be going on at AboutBeverages.com for the week of December 7th - December 13th 2014.  We go back to the barrel again, but this time our beverage of choice has a little more age.  It happens this Wednesday with a "Give It A Shot" featuring the Glen Elgin 12yr Speyside Single Malt Scotch.  Even though it is one of the smaller regions in Scotland over half of the single malt distilleries reside in this area.  Make sure you're following us on twitter for all of our other beverage tastings and info.  Click the link here to get to our twitter page.  Also, don't forget to check out our channel on youtube and if you go to our website from your mobile phone you can also get our app!

Give It A Shot - Odell Brewing 180 Shilling

It's always an exciting time in the tasting room when one of our favorite breweries puts out something new.  That's exactly what we have today with the Odell Brewing 180 Shilling.  In honor of their 25th anniversary they decided to not only brew a double sized version of their very first beer, the 90 shilling, but also to age it on oak.  Time to taste and find out if this limited release batch is worthy of its silver anniversary status or if the 180 Shilling is just four pounds over priced.  One last note before you even ask.  Yes, my shilling to pounds conversion math is pretty accurate.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Caorunn Scottish Gin

To be honest, the first thing that comes to our minds when we think of a distilled spirit from Scotland would be Scotch.  It certainly seems like the most logical option, but we have come to discover that's not the only thing we should think of.  At the tasting table today we have the Caorunn Scottish Gin.  Your read that right, a gin from Scotland.  Longtime viewers may remember this isn't the first gin we have had from that area (The Botanist) and we're sure won't be the last.  Infusing not only the usual gin suspects along with some local botanicals (rowan berry, heather, bog myrtle, dandelion, coul blush apple) is what sets it apart.  Time to taste and find out if this gin makes us long for a martini or wanting to stick with Scotch.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.
