Give It A Shot - Cotillion California Pinot Noir 2016

Welcome to the second phase of our Pinot Noir comparison. To bring you up to speed, in our previous podcast, we tried the Erath Pinot Noir, which is from Oregon. If you want to know what we thought about it, please see the previous post and watch or listen as we discuss our perceptions. As we mentioned, we decided to stay with the same grape for the subsequent podcast, but decided to check out a California representation of this delicate varietal. The wine we will be trying is the Cotillion Pinot Noir. It is a Trader Joe’s exclusive and has long been a Keith recommendation for those who are looking for a Pinot Noir of a certain price and style. It has been about 2 years since he last tried it and Andrew has never tried it, so it should make for some good discussion. What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Erath Oregon Pinot Noir 2016

We know that while we are truly about all types of beverages, we do tend to skew more often toward beer. It is easy to buy just one for us to talk about on a podcast and with few exceptions, the price structure is usually just what we are looking for. However, this week our fancies take a turn for the grape at About Beverages. This podcast (and the one which follows it) came about as we tried to decide what the menu would be for our Thursday night livestream session. We won’t bore you with the details, but the end result was that we would try wines this week. We settled on the Pinot Noir varietal and decided to compare and contrast the Oregon and California styles. We decided to start with the selection from Oregon and the one we chose was the Erath Pinot Noir. This is the 2016 vintage and usually runs right about $15 or $16. What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Hop Valley Brewing Cryo Stash Imperial IPA

Time sure goes by quickly when you are doing something you love. We know that’s true because this week in which we released three podcasts has sure flown by! To put that in an even larger scope, we can’t believe how quickly ten years has flown by. Why do we even mention that you may ask? Well, believe it or not, About Beverages has been around for over 10 years now and next month we will celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the release of our very first podcast. More information on that will follow in the coming weeks, so stay tuned. For now though, let’s get back to this week. This podcast is the third and final release for the week and we will be traveling to Oregon for this beverage. We will be trying the Cryo Stash Imperial IPA from Hop Valley Brewing Company out of Eugene Oregon. This beer features Simcoe Hops treated at sub zero temperatures. What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Cooper & Thief Bourbon Barrel Aged Red Blend

We have often spoken of our unabashed affinity for most things barrel-aged. We say “most things” because while barrel-aging certainly can add wonderful depth and complexity to a beverage, if it is not done well, things can go awry in a most disturbing way. This podcast features a beverage aged in whiskey barrels and while it is not uncommon to see this type of product available on your favorite retailers shelves, it is still somewhat uncommon. Today we will be trying the Cooper and Thief Red Blend. It is a blend of red wine varietals aged for 3 months in bourbon whiskey barrels. What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Pueblo Vida Chroma IPA

This podcast begins a busy week for us here at About Beverages. As we mentioned last week, due to a busy December, while we continued to record videos we got behind in the actual sharing of those videos with you, our valued friend and viewer/listener. This will be the first of three that will be released this week and we will kick things off with a local brewery where we have previously encountered deliciousness. The beverage we will be trying is the Chroma from Pueblo Vida Brewing Company. Chroma is a series that they do where they brew an IPA and feature a new “craft maltster” with each release. This release features Admiral Maltings out of Alameda, California. What did we think? Give It A Shot - Tombstone Brewing Dank Fruit Double IPA

Even though we are two months past (or ten months before) November, as you will see, we have a lot to be thankful for this week. Or should we say “dankful” for this week. We hope you will excuse the horrible pun, but it was right there, a piece of low-hanging literary fruit, just waiting to be plucked. We went out on a limb with these somewhat vague references to give you a clue or two about what we will be trying on this second podcast of the week. We do have a theme going here, but for this podcast we have gotten a little closer to home with something we can consider to be “local” The beverage we will be trying on this episode is the Dank Fruit Double IPA from Tombstone Brewing Company. Their website states that it is their hoppiest beer to date and the can uses the word “crushable.” What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - La Cumbre Brewing Project Dank Winter Edition Double IPA

It has been too long since we last came to you via podcast or video and we are glad to say that we are back! We hope that you all have had a great season of celebrating and that your New Year is off to a healthy and happy start. We have had quite a busy time this past few months and while we have not been releasing videos on a regular basis, we have still been recording, as well as streaming live most Thursday evenings via Twitch. For our first release of the New Year we are traveling to a state with which we share a border. Before you guess California we say to you, “not so fast, my friend.” For this particular beverage we are heading to the state that borders us to the east, New Mexico, and to a brewery we are familiar with, yet have not featured on a podcast. The beverage we will be featuring on this podcast is the Project Dank from La Cumbre. According to their website, La Cumbre states that Project Dank is an “ever changing expression of their hoppiest endeavors.” This beer was recommended to us by Scott at Tap and Bottle, so we knew we were off to a good start.  What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Duncan Taylor Dimensions Highland Park 19yr Single Barrel Whisky

The podcast you are about to watch was about 9 months in the making. Actually the more we think about it, the time it took to get to this point was longer. Much longer. The reality is that this podcast was a journey that took about ten years to reach the destination. We say ten years because the idea for us to start our website happened over ten years ago. We will talk about that in more detail over the next few months as we celebrate our 10 year anniversary with all of you. The events that directly made this possible began about 9 months ago. It is hard to believe, but we have now been streaming live via Twitch since early last year and it is because of those of you who support us in any way that we were able to try the beverage that we will feature in this video. Because of your appreciation for what we do, we found ourselves in the position of being able to purchase a beverage well outside of our normal budget. As our way of saying thank you, we did not try this particular beverage until we could be on camera to record a podcast live and share it with you. We narrowed our choices down to materials in the spirit world, specifically a bourbon or scotch. With a little bit of research and the help of Scott at Total Wine, we narrowed our choices down to a final four and ultimately to the winner. Without further adieu, the beverage we chose was the Duncan Taylor Dimensions Highland Park 19 Year single malt scotch whisky.  What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.
