Give It A Shot - Lagunitas One Hitter Series Secret Agenda Pale Bock Beer

One of the best things that can happen for us at About Beverages is when a plan comes together, especially when that plan wasn’t even actually planned. That is what happened this week as we suddenly realized we had stumbled into a theme. And not just any theme, a timely and relevant theme at that. This week we will celebrate baseball. With the season barely into its third week as we recorded we decided to commemorate the (almost) brand new season. A timely delivery of beer to the Trader Joe’s where Keith works was a key first step in the development of this theme. That beer will be the first thing we try this week. The beverage we are trying on this episode is the Secret Agenda from Lagunitas. It is the latest edition of their One Hitter series and was made in conjunction with Moonlight Brewing out of Santa Rosa California. The style is Pale Bock and they say it is the perfect beer for the spring season. What did we think? Give It A Shot - Modern Times Beer Dreamspeaker IPA

It is always a good thing to try something new. Take a step outside the comfort zone. Expand one’s horizons. Explore uncharted territory. For this particular show we will be doing none of those things. We will be re-visiting one of our favorite breweries and trying a style of beer we are very familiar with which is made with hops we have most certainly tried before. We guess it should be noted that we have never had this exact beer and the unique combination of malt and hops contained therein. The last few sentences might make it seem like we were not excited to try this beer, but that assumption would be incorrect. The beverage we will be trying on this podcast is the Dreamspeaker IPA from Modern Times. It is their monthly release for March and April and also features some cool, if not visually disorienting, graphics. What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Lagunitas Hop Water and H2ops Water

There are times when as much as you may want to try something, the only thing you can do is wait. One can search the whole city over, call trusted contacts within the industry, and even hope and pray, all to no avail. That is probably a bit over-dramatic as we were only searching for this particular item for about a week, but in today’s world a week feels like at least 10 days. All kidding aside, we had hoped to try this last week, but could not find it. That makes last weeks loss this weeks gain. The beverage we are featuring on this episode is the Lagunitas Hop Water. It is a sparkling water with hops and natural flavors added. It is non-alcoholic, with no carbs and no calories. We will also re-visit a sparkling hop water we tried a few months ago, H2OPS, and do a quick comparison at the end of the show. What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Metallica Blackened Whiskey Batch 88

We believe the saying goes, “patience is a virtue.” If this is true, and why wouldn’t it be, then Andrew is truly one of the most virtuous people you will ever come across. In this episode we will finally be trying a beverage who’s journey to the tasting table was literally months in the making. We will go over the story of how we came to taste it in more detail during the show, but there were several challenges along the way. First, Andrew had to locate a place selling it that would ship it to us. Then, we had to wait to receive the batch that we were actually looking for. Then Keith had hip surgery which delayed us a few weeks. Since Andrew was determined not to have any until we could podcast on it together, he has patiently waited all this time with the bottle just sitting there, lonely and unopened in his kitchen. Finally, at long last the time has come and we are happy to bring you this episode where we try Blackened, a collaborative whiskey made by Dave Pickerell and Metallica. It is a blended whiskey consisting mostly of bourbon and part of the time it spent in the barrel it was exposed to music from the band. Each batch was influenced by a different playlist and those playlists were selected by members of the band. The batch we are trying is number 88 and the playlist was curated by Kirk Hammett. What did we think? Give It A Shot - Coca-Cola Georgia Peach & California Raspberry Sodas

As you probably already have surmised from the name of our website, YouTube channel, etc, we are About Beverages of all kinds. While it is true that we do fall victim to certain category redundancies (most specifically beer), we do challenge ourselves to continually seek out new and exciting liquid consumables. This week we turn to soda and while we have done shows on them before, it has been a while. And although this particular company is by no means new to the soda game, these particular incarnations are something new. This week we will be trying the Local Flavors line from Coca Cola.  The two flavors we will be sharing are the Georgia Peach and California Raspberry. Andrew found these on a visit to a local grocery store and was intrigued enough to grab a bottle of each for us to try and share with you, our valued listener.  What did we think?  What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Kings Coast Coffee Bourbon Barrel Aged Honduras

Sometimes in life there are certain challenges that are unavoidable. Often you see them coming, or at least you know they are out there and will soon be knocking on your door. Many times you are blindsided by them and left to rely on your own survival instincts as well as the love and support of those around you to overcome the situation. We mention this because recently you may have noticed that we took a brief hiatus from our live-streaming on Thursday nights and subsequent podcast recording. Due to a circumstance that we knew was coming (Keith having hip replacement surgery) we had to temporarily pause our weekly gathering where we discuss and share beverages with you. The good news is that Keith is healing nicely (as far as we know) and that we have started trying and sharing beverages again with you. This week marks our return and we have decided to go back to the beverage where it all began for us, coffee. We will be trying the Kings Coast Barrel-aged Honduras coffee. This is a company Andrew was familiar with and you know we are always intrigued when barrel aging is involved, especially when those barrels used to contain bourbon. What did we think? Give It A Shot - Jefferson’s Pritchard Hill Cabernet Cask Finished Bourbon

Welcome to part two of this Cabernet theme week here at About Beverages. What a wonderful meaningful coincidence it was to find that we had a new Cabernet to try for our previous podcast and that it had a connection to another beverage that we wanted to share with our viewers, listeners and friends. This particular item was given to Andrew by some good friends who also happen to be regular watchers of our live-streams on twitch.tv/aboutbeverages on Thursday nights. The beverage we are trying for this episode is the Jefferson’s Reserve Pritchard Hill Cabernet Cask Finished Bourbon. We have actually tried this before, but it was a couple of years ago and not for a podcast. This was also a particularly exciting podcast for us because we are going to be trying this bourbon in Andrew’s new Norlan whisky glasses. They have a really cool design which we are hoping will take our spirits enjoyment to another level. 11, perhaps? Join us as we find out! What did we think? Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's Platinum Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley 2016

While they don’t happen every week, when we can do back-to-back podcasts that are connected by a particular theme it is something we enjoy. The thread tying these two items together may not be instantly obvious, but when you look a little closer it becomes very apparent. In our weekly discussion about the items to share this week, Andrew mentioned that he had a bourbon he wanted to share and Keith wanted to stay with the wine theme for at least another week. Fortuitous events were already in motion to tie these two topics together that we were not aware of at the time. The first of the items that we will try this week is the wine portion. The wine we are trying is the Trader Joe’s Platinum Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma Knights Valley. The Platinum Reserve line is the most expensive of their private label wines at $14.99 per bottle and should compare with other wines in $30 to $40 range. Without giving away too much, the bourbon we will try next has a Cabernet component to it as well. If you watch us live on Thursday night on twitch.tv/aboutbeverages (which we highly recommend) then you already knew that. What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.
