Give It A Shot - Surly Brewing Todd the Axe Man IPA

Depending on the time and situation, shopping is one of those tasks that can be either tedious or enjoyable. Frustrating or revelatory. Drudgery or seemingly over before it has begun. For us, beverage shopping is a time for fun and thirst quenching discovery. The topic of this podcast was discovered during a recent trip to our local Total Wine. We had heard of this brewery and the beer itself receives good ratings and rave reviews on line, but until recently it had not been available in Arizona. The beer we will be trying this week is called Todd the Axe Man from Surly Brewing Company in Minnesota. It is named after their brewer and the fact that he also is a guitar player. It is a West Coast Style IPA with a super cool looking can.  What did we think? Give It A Shot - Modern Times Tortuga Berliner Weisse

We all have those things in our lives that we call our “favorites.” Whether it is a place, a book, a memory, a meal, etc, the possibilities are endless. If you are a regular follower of our show (if you are not you should be) then you know that one of our favorite things is beer. More specifically, one for our favorite breweries is Modern Times located in San Diego, CA. For this podcast, we decided to partake of another one of their offerings, the Tortuga. This beer falls into the sour category and is a classic Berliner style made with tangerines and soursops, which are a tropical fruit known for having significant amounts of vitamin C. Also, let’s be honest, it is just fun to say soursop.  What did we think? Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's Typic Rosé

Did you miss us? At least we didn’t stay away for two years this time. Due to reasons beyond our control, we had to skip a week, but we are back and the first beverage this week we have to share with you will be anything but typical. Or will it? It may not be typical, but it actually will be Typic, Typic rosé wine that is. This is a wine that Keith really enjoyed last year, to the tune of at least 4 bottles, but this is a new year and a new vintage. One never knows what Mother Nature has in store for us from year to year, so continuity is anything but a guarantee. Join us as we delve into this wine for the first time this year to find out if the present reality can match the recollections of the past.  What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Pueblo Vida and Arizona Wilderness Terminalia IPA

When your brother and co-founder of AboutBeverages.com tells you he is going down to one of Tucson’s best local breweries your natural reaction is to ask him to pick up a four pack for you (that you will reimburse him for of course-this stuff ain’t cheap). This scenario happened to us very recently with Andrew being the one doing the journeying and Keith being the one doing the requesting. I put the decision of which beer to buy for me in Andrew’s capable hands and shortly after he placed that beer in my grateful hands we decided that it would be the beer we did on our podcast this week. The beer we will be trying this week is the Terminalia which is a collaboration of Pueblo Vida (local) and Wilderness (sort of local). What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Stone Brewing Saison du Buff Aged in Red and White Wine Barrels

What is better than one great brewery creating a new beer for its loyal fans? Obviously, it’s when two great breweries get together and create a new beer for their loyal fans. We know this sounds crazy, but what if a third great brewery decided they wanted in on this action? Can it be even exponentially better? Potentially, chaos could ensue as this triumvirate toiled over their concoction, but we would all still keep our fingers crossed and hope that somehow, some way, this could all work out for the betterment of humanity, and of course, the craft beer crazed populace of which we are proud to be a part. These are some of the questions we asked ourselves and points that we pondered as we tried the Saison du Buff, a collaboration beer from Stone, Dogfish Head, and Victory. The version that we tried features its usual blend of herbs, but was also aged in both red and white wine barrels and has been augmented by the addition of brettanomyces.  What do you think? Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's Reserve Barossa Shiraz 2016

Sometimes a beverage comes along that immediately grabs your attention. It could be the latest release from your favorite brewery, a new twist on an old favorite from a trusted distillery, or maybe it is something as simple as the eye catching packaging. This podcast features a wine that made us take immediate notice for two reasons. One, it was made from one of our favorite grapes from a great growing region for this varietal. Two, it is from a trusted source for great wines at value driven prices. The wine we are trying this week is the Trader Joe’s Reserve Shiraz from Barossa in Australia. This bottle would retail from $20-$25 if it wasn’t private labeled exclusively for Trader Joe’s. Listen and drink along with us as we see if this wine has the “legs” to stand on, or at least to cling to the inside of our glasses.  What do you think? Give It A Shot - Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition Whiskey

Irish whiskey and an IPA. At first glance these two may not have much in common. A combination not often thought of, at least not as often as Irish whiskey, Bailey’s, and Guinness, but I digress. Look closer, however, and you will possibly see a match made in heaven, or at least in Ireland. For this podcast we wanted to celebrate the milestone of reaching 50 followers (which we have now moved past) with something special so we chose the Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition whiskey. Watch and drink along with us as we explore the sensory revelations of this interesting pairing. We also want to say a big Thank You to all of our followers and subscribers! We couldn’t do it without you. Well, we could and we have, but it’s definitely not as much fun!  What do you think? Give It A Shot - Modern Times Beer Fraxos IPA

Life in these modern times can be defined by a multitude of words. Among those are challenging, exciting, rewarding, difficult, and fun. Modern Times can also be described as very delicious, especially when we are speaking of beverages from Modern Times Beer. As Andrew and I have discussed, we have yet to meet a beverage from Modern Times we didn’t like. Since discovering them a few years back, we have tried several of their offerings including some of their coffee (yes, they roast coffee too!) and we have podcasted on a few of them. In this most recent podcast, we sat down with a can of Fraxos, which is their release for the month of March. Join us as we share our interpretation of this IPA and see whether or not this beer can stand tall among the many Modern Times beverages that we have tried.  Sit back and watch or listen.
