Give It A Shot - Flying Dog Brewing Snake Dog IPA

If you looked up the word unique in the dictionary you might find a picture of a beer from Flying Dog Brewing.  Located in Frederick, Maryland the label art for their beer is done by Ralph Steadman, a longtime friend of Hunter S. Thompson who had become friends with George Stranahan the founder of Flying Dog in the late 1960s.  Now that we have discussed the outside of the bottle it's time to talk about what's inside and that's what really counts.  Today at the tasting table we have the Snake Dog IPA.  Self declared by the brewery to be their resident "hop monster" this beer gets its character from a duo of hops;  Warrior and Columbus.  They may have their original roots in Colorado, but the flavor of the previous beers we have tried has always been more of an east coast style.  Time to taste and see if this beer would make a good companion for our next trip to Vegas or if it only brings about fear and loathing.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Dry Fly Gin from Dry Fly Distilling

Gin.  One of the most underused and undervalued spirits in our humble option.  If our website, podcast and videos do nothing else than further people's knowledge and appreciation of the "other" clear spirit, then our work will not have been in vain.  We further that cause at the tasting table with a gin from Dry Fly Distilling out of Spokane, Washington.  The uniqueness of this gin comes from it's use of locally sourced ingredients such as Eastern Washington soft winter wheatjuniper, dried Washington apple, mint, and hops.  Will this bountiful blend of botanicals make for a delicious martini or refreshing gin & tonic?  Time to taste and find out.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's 2013 La Paca Spanish Garnacha

With the success of last weeks wine from Trader Joe's, Keith decided we should try another.  Today at the tasting table we have the La Paca Spanish Garnacha.  This particular grape originated in Spain, but goes by Grenache in the other areas where it is cultivated:  Sardinia, the south of France and California's San Joaquin Valley.  Due to it's tolerance for drought/heat and late ripening it has become one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world.  Typically used as part of red blends such as Rioja and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, aged monovarietal wines can cost anywhere from $30-$60.  Time to taste and see if the $7 La Paca brings our palate a glimpse of all this varietal has to offer.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Trader Joe's Pacific Grove California Chardonnay

Ripped from the pages of the latest Trader Joe's Fearless Flyer, today at the tasting tables we have the Pacific Grove California Chardonnay.  Made from 100% Chardonnay grapes, this wine goes through a very unique process of small batch barrel and malolactic fermentation.  These two processes are more common in red wine making and are normally reserved for higher end wines, but at $5.99 and a Chardonnay this wine is neither.  Time to taste and see if all that work was worthwhile or if these grapes should have stayed on the vine.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.
