Give It A Shot - Bottle Logic Brewing Hanamachi Rice Lager

It is no secret that we love beer at About Beverages. We sometimes fall into the pattern of trying the same styles of beer, but we are aware of this growth area and are always on the lookout for something different. This particular selection enjoyed a serendipitous path to our show. A Friday afternoon conversation between Keith and a co-worker touched on the topic of rice lagers and obviously brought them into his consciousness. The following day, he was enjoying a Recursion IPA from Bottle Logic at our local Tap and Bottle as he perused the offerings chilling behind the glass doors. It was so good he inquired as to whether or not there was anything else there from Bottle Logic, and to our good fortune, there was! One of the choices was the Hanamachi Rice Lager which is what we have for this episode. As we said before, it is from Bottle Logic Brewing located in Anaheim, California. For this style, rice is added to the grain mix and they are generally referred to as crisp and refreshing with a dry finish. What did we think? Give It A Shot - Scapa Glansa Single Malt Scotch

This week the good news is that we are excited to try a new Scotch. The bad news, unfortunately, is that with the discovery of this new (to us) Scotch, we learned that we have to begrudgingly say goodbye to one of our all-time favorites. Through a series of unfortunate events, we have come to learn that the Scapa 16 year Scotch is no longer being produced at the distillery. This was quite a shock to both of us as it has long been one of our favorites. There is even a podcast from 2010 that you can listen to in the archives at AboutBeverages.com to prove it. So we will bid a fond adieu to this spirit, who ironically is now only with us in spirit, and memory of course. You may have a hunch by now that the scotch we are trying may be connected in some way to Scapa and if that is your guess, then you are correct. The beverage that we are trying today is the Scapa Glansa. Glansa is an Old Norse word that means “shining storm-laden skies” and this scotch is the first peated single malt expression from the Orkney island based distillery. What did we think? Give It A Shot - Waterloo Grape Sparkling Water

The impetus for this episode occurred during some of our live-streaming banter a couple of Thursday’s ago. As many of you know, we are on Twitch.TV/aboutbeverages most Thursday nights. We are usually chatting with each other, interacting with our viewers, recording a podcast or two, doing some gameplay, and in general having a great time. Often, we will discuss the various beverages we have had during the week and we always have something that we are trying as we open our show. A few weeks ago, we were trying a particular type of flavored sparkling water, with each of us enjoying a different flavor. While we were drinking them, we started looking at their website to see what other flavors they had to offer. Two of them in particular caught our attention and we have one of them for this episode. Today we are trying the Waterloo Sparkling Water Grape flavor. All of their flavors have no calories, sugar, or sodium, but we are very hopeful that this one will have plenty of deliciousness. What did we think? Give It A Shot - Cooper and Thief Tequila Barrel Aged Sauvignon Blanc

We did not really plan it at the time, but we now realize that there is a common thread to the two items that we are trying this week. No, we are not trying another Metallica beverage collaboration or something from Stone Brewing. The theme, albeit a loose one, is that both of these beverage purveyors have made previous appearances on our show this year. Metallica made an appearance in March with their Blackened Whiskey and the winery that made this episode’s beverage was featured back in January. On this show we will be trying the Cooper and Thief Tequila Barrel Aged Sauvignon Blanc. This Sauvignon blanc, which also has some other white wines that comprise 22% of the blend, is aged for three months in Casa Noble anejo tequila barrels. Barrel aged anything intrigues us, and this will definitely be a new experience. What did we think? Give It A Shot - Stone Brewing and Metallica Enter Night Pilsner

Hush, little listener, don’t say a word. Never mind that opening of the can you heard. On second thought, we should mind the opening of the can we all just heard. That can being opened means we are very close to trying a collaboration beer. This collaboration features one of Andrew’s favorite bands of all time and one of our favorite breweries. They got together and created a Pilsner. A Pilsner admittedly we don’t know much about as they are being very secretive in regards to the contents of its ingredients. If this sounds vaguely familiar to you, it should as the band that had a hand in creating this beer also recently made an appearance on our podcast as co-creator of a whiskey. This time around however, we will be trying the Enter Night Pilsner, brought to us from the creative minds of Stone Brewing and Metallica. About all we know is that the alcohol checks in at 5.7% and it is a Pilsner. What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Lagunitas Brewing Phase Change Wet-Hopped Juicy Ale

For this episode, we return to a tried and true formula for deciding on what beverage we will try on our show. This specific formula essentially involves Keith going into work on Wednesday and finding that something new has been delivered to the store. It has worked in the past, and this last week was no different. That formula also brought us back to one of our favorite breweries. There is a certain comfort in that, but fear not, as we will soon make a move out of our comfort zone. However, that will not happen this week. The beverage we are trying this week is the Phase Change Wet-Hopped Juicy Ale from Lagunitas Brewing Company. Their website mentions that it is an unfiltered, juicy nectar, made from the freshest of hops right after the harvest. What did we think? What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Give It A Shot - Mother Road Brewing Spring Lager

There are times in life when you make unexpected discoveries. Sometimes those discoveries are actual things, sometimes they are personal revelations. In the case of the beverage we are going to try tonight, it was both. On a recent trip to Northern Arizona, Keith found himself having a flight of beers at a local brewery. Technically, he wasn’t alone as he was surrounded by several others enjoying an adult beverage, but since he did not go there with anyone, he felt like he was there by himself. That was discovery number 1; to realize that he had sat down at a bar by himself and ordered a beer, which is something he hadn’t done before. Discovery number two was one of the beers in his flight. A beer he felt was interesting enough to purchase a small growler of and bring home. That beer is the Mother Road spring lager and it is what we will be trying on this episode. As our tastes tend to lean more toward ales, we are always on the lookout for a lager that we could enjoy. Unfortunately, this lager is only available seasonally and at the brewery, but if you find yourself in Flagstaff Arizona at the right time, you could be in luck. What did we think? Give It A Shot - Adalina Bodegas Verdejo 2017 and 2018

We have some good news and not as good news for you this week. The not as good news is that we will only have one episode for you to enjoy. The good news is that we will actually try two beverages on that one episode as we will be comparing different vintages of the same wine. The reason we only have one show is because we did a little gaming for the last half of our time live-streaming last week and we enjoyed a Plymouth martini while we did. The martini paired well with our game play, but more importantly, we enjoyed it to toast the memory of our Uncle Joe who passed away last week. We have many wonderful memories of our parents getting together with our Uncle Joe and Aunt Donna. One of our favorites would begin in the late afternoon when it was time to make dinner. They would tell stories, laugh, prepare delicious food and beverages and enjoy every minute of their time together. Kind of like we do here on our shows and podcasts. Who knows, maybe the seeds of our podcast go back even farther than we thought. One of their beverages of choice was a martini, so it seemed most appropriate for us to honor his memory in that way. Now back to the show…

This week will be trying the Adalina Spanish Verdejo wine, both the 2017 and 2018 vintages. The wine is 100% Verdejo and while we had heard good things about the 2017 vintage, the reports had been mixed on the 2018. Keith just happened to have a bottle of the 2017 in his fridge, so we thought we would take advantage of this fortuitous event and do a comparison to settle the debate once and for all.  What did we think?
