Give It A Shot - Anchorage / Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Boreal Saison

Collaborations can go either way.  Peanut butter and chocolate?  Great collaboration!  Puff Daddy and Jimmy Page?  Terrible collaboration for an even more terrible movie!  Two brothers tasting beverages and sharing good times?  Totally fantastic!  A farmhouse saison created by two well respected breweries?  That question will be answered today at the tasting table.  Anchorage and Jolly Pumpkin Brewing bring us a unique collaboration called the Calabaza Boreal.  The unique part of this brew is not that Gabe of Anchorage and Ron of Jolly Pumpkin created a beer together, but that they each brewed a batch at their own facility to give their personal spin on the same recipe.  As you can see from the video we are trying the Anchorage version which uses a different primary yeast and some of Jolly Pumpkin's own Oro de Calabaza right from the barrel.  Time to taste and see if we are glad these to were able to come together or if they should have gone their separate ways.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

What's on tap for the week of August 9th - August 15th 2015

Just a little reminder of what will be going on at AboutBeverages.com for the week of August 9th - August 15th 2015.  It seems without even thinking about it we often have back to back shows with same style beers.  It can be a really great thing to see what large flavor differences can come about within a given style.  I guess what we are trying to say is we have another saison this week at the tasting table.  It happens this Wednesday with a "Give It A Shot" featuring the Anchorage / Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Boreal Saison.  If you've had this beer let us know what you thought of it by leaving your own tasting notes in the comment section here at our website or on YouTube.  Make sure you're following us on twitter for all of our other beverage tastings and info.  Click the link here to get to our twitter page.  Also, don't forget to check out our channel on youtube and if you go to our website from your mobile phone you can also get our app!

Give It A Shot - Prairie Artisan Ales Standard Hoppy Farmhouse Ale

What's the best way to start a show about a beer brewed in Oklahoma?  With some Jurassic Park movie series and DTS sound discussion of course!  Who knows how it came up, but that's what happens when the liquid libations start flowing.  Today at that tasting table we have the Prairie Artisan Ales Standard Hoppy Farmhouse Ale.  Not unlike this website the brewery was started by two brothers who wanted to do something awesome.  I'm sure that's the rallying cry of many people, but these two put their money where there mouth is and funded the brewery themselves.  With their massive lineup of beers the choice of which one to try first from a new brewery can be a daunting task.  Luckily Keith was able to get some sage advice once again from Mike at Olive Tree Market in San Diego and a choice was made.  Using an unfamiliar New Zealand hop, Moteuka, this beer looks to have a balance of funk, spice and lime citrus.  Time to taste and see if this beer leaves us feeling that Oklahoma's OK.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Modern Times Beer Oneida Seasonal Pale Ale

Modern Times Beer has become another one of our "must have breweries" whenever Keith or I travel to California with our families.  From the light to the dark they have found a wonderful balance of flavor in all that they create.  Today at the tasting table we have the Oneida Seasonal Pale Ale.  Using three hops, Hallertau Blanc, Cascade and the experimental 05256, this sessionable beer is looking to pack quite a fruity punch from just 50 IBUs.  Time to taste and see if just like San Diego this beer is made to "..always go down smooth."  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.

Give It A Shot - Modern Times Madeira Barrel Aged Colombian Coffee

We love coffee.  Working at Arbuckle Coffee as Keith and I did (I still do) for so many years is what set us on the journey to open up our palates.  We also love things that have been barrel aged.  I don't have any good historical tie in for that but I do have an equation that seems appropriate.  Barrel aging = delicious.  The folks at Modern Times in Point Loma, California have brought those two loves together in a rather unique way.  At the tasting table today we have their Madeira Barrel Aged Colombian Coffee.  How do they do it?  They take green unroasted coffee beans and age them in a Madeira wine barrel for as long as they feel necessary.  Time to taste and see if some additional character is brought to the coffee or it's simply bean there done that.  If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@q.com.
